Cosmetics maker Shiseido Co. said Wednesday it will open an online shopping mall next April so customers can purchase most of the same cosmetics it sells exclusively at department stores.

While Japanese cosmetics makers including Shiseido view online sales as a danger to their traditional distribution networks, such as department stores, the company has decided that an Internet shopping mall is needed to attract young customers.

Shiseido will call on other businesses, such as clothing and health food retailers, to join the online shopping mall, which will target women with products focused on health and beauty, it said.

"We'd like to establish a system to draw new customers by utilizing the Internet," Shiseido President Hisayuki Suekawa told a news conference.
