MIYAKONOJO, Miyazaki Pref. (Kyodo) Mount Shinmoe on the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures erupted Monday morning for the 11th time since late January, according to a local meteorological observatory.

The eruption, which occurred at 5:07 a.m., follows one Friday and comes as the city of Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture, urged residents in some areas Sunday to prepare for evacuation to avoid rain-triggered mudslides involving accumulated ash from the volcano.

The municipal government, however, lifted the alert at around 8 a.m. Monday because rainfall in excess of 4 mm an hour, the benchmark for such alerts, was not expected after 9 a.m.
