NAGOYA (Kyodo) Nagoya University opened a laboratory Tuesday dedicated to developing safe and environmentally friendly vehicles and traffic systems, calling it the largest such facility in Japan.

The laboratory will be used to develop an advanced electric vehicle and achieve other innovations under the concept of "green mobility," by conducting studies crisscrossing fields including materials, machinery, electronics, information technology and traffic engineering, the university said.

It will also conduct research in cooperation with Toyota Motor Corp. and other world-class manufacturers based in and around Aichi Prefecture, as well as with universities in Germany, the United States, China and other countries.
