The holiday rush peaked Thursday as travelers heading for their hometowns packed bullet trains and domestic flights throughout the day.

Reserved seats were sold out on all Tokaido Shinkansen Line trains between Tokyo and Osaka and the occupancy rate for coaches with nonreserved seats on trains departing Tokyo was as high as 150 percent, operators said.

Other shinkansen lines covering eastern, northeastern and central Japan were also running at full occupancy, the operators said.

As for airlines, most domestic flights departing from Haneda airport in Tokyo were completely booked Thursday.

The railways and airlines said the return rush is expected to peak Monday or Tuesday.
