The Shiki Theatrical Co.’s production of “The Lion King” held its 7,000th performance Sunday, hitting the milestone after 11 years and nine months of shows in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart, representing all the animals and plants in the savanna,” actor Akihiko Fukamizu, who plays the villain Scar, told a Tokyo audience during a curtain call. The musical hit the 7,000-performance mark faster than any theatrical play in Japan, according to Shiki, which has been staging the show since 1998 in cooperation with Disney.
