Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. on Saturday opened a renovated Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district featuring a terrace covered with a lawn and an original selection of fashion items.

The new store is Ginza's largest commercial facility with a total floor space of 36,000 sq. meters, an extension of the previous store's space by 1.5 times.

The face-lift was the first large-scale renovation of a department store under Isetan Mitsukoshi since Mitsukoshi Ltd. and Isetan Co. integrated their managements under the holding company in April 2008.

The new store has employed some of Isetan's sales knowhow, such as promoting apparel items selected by the department store's own buyers, rather than a certain brand's products.

About 2,000 people had lined up before the store's scheduled opening at 10 a.m., prompting the store to open about 15 minutes earlier.

"The renovation of Mitsukoshi will provide a good opportunity for Ginza to catch the public's eye once again," a department store official said.
