The Cabinet Office on Wednesday named private-sector economist Kazuo Mizuno as its deputy director general in charge of economic and fiscal research to assess the country's fiscal situation and plan economic policy.

Mizuno, 56, a macroeconomic expert who has served as chief economist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co., will double as councilor of the Cabinet Secretariat, the Cabinet Office said.

The government is expected to seek Mizuno's expertise in accelerating its efforts to balance growth and fiscal consolidation policies as well as overcome deflation.
