TOTTORI (Kyodo) An accident involving four sedans, a minicar and a motorcycle early Sunday in the city of Tottori left an unidentified man dead and more than 10 people injured, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead about two hours after the accident, which took place on a curve about 3 km north of JR Tottori Station, near the Tottori Sand Dues along the Sea of Japan coast.

The man who died appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, the police said. He was riding in the minicar's passenger seat.

The accident occurred when one of the sedans entered the oncoming lane to pass another vehicle and collided with the minicar, the police said.

Designated driver

KUMAMOTO (Kyodo) A police car collided with a van in the oncoming lane in the city of Kumamoto early Sunday, leaving the driver and seven passengers of the van injured, police said.

The van and its driver belong to a dispatch service that provides rides for people who have been drinking alcohol.

Neither officer in the cruiser was hurt when their vehicle veered across the centerline, apparently by accident, according to the police.

"We'd like to provide thorough instructions to prevent traffic accidents," a Kumamoto-Kita Police officer said.
