A research institute under the welfare ministry said Friday that 34.4 percent of households in Japan will be composed of people living alone by 2020.

By 2025, more than 20 percent of households will be composed of couples aged 65 and older or people living alone in the same age category, according to the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research.
