Three fishermen rescued from an overturned boat four days after it capsized off Hachijojima Island have revealed that a toppled refrigerator prevented them from evacuating the boat and then kept them dry and safe inside a small space, officials who have spoken to them said Thursday.
The 19-ton fishing boat’s skipper, who initially escaped from the vessel, was found drowned in a life raft Wednesday, while four other crew members, who also escaped from the boat, remain missing.
