The Lower House will reopen aging apartment units for Diet members in Tokyo's Aoyama district to accommodate the influx of freshmen Democratic Party of Japan lawmakers.

Opened in 1962, the Aoyama housing complex in Minato Ward was closed in 2007 due to aging and disrepair.

The new DPJ ranks have replaced senior Liberal Democratic Party members, many of whom had their own homes in Tokyo acquired over the LDP's five decades in power.

The influx of junior politicians is a result of the DPJ's Aug. 30 landslide victory.

Currently, only 300 apartments at a complex in the Akasaka district are available for lawmakers in the 480-seat chamber.

Before the Aoyama complex was closed, monthly rent for an apartment was only ¥15,000, while that for a larger unit at the Akasaka site is ¥92,000.

The Aoyama complex is in need of repairs and about 30 lawmakers, now staying in hotels or commuting to Tokyo from distant constituencies, will be able to move in to the refurbished apartments early next year.
