The tougher emissions reduction goal of the new government has rattled the domestic auto industry, but Nissan Motor Co.'s Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga said the company can make a large contribution to achieving it with its zero-emission strategy centering on electric vehicles.

Until further technological advances are made in electric vehicles, Shiga said Nissan will try to fill in the gaps and satisfy the needs of each market with larger gas-electric hybrids and clean diesel engines for long-distance drivers.

"There is no doubt that it's tough," Shiga said in a recent interview, referring to the more stringent climate goal.
