Renowned psychoanalyst Takeo Doi, who penned the 1970s best-seller "The Anatomy of Dependence," an analysis of the mentality and behavioral patterns of Japanese people, died Sunday of old age, his family said Monday. He was 89.
The book, published in 1971 and later translated into English and other languages, dealt with the concept of "amae," or emotional dependency on and the desire to be cared for by authority figures.
It triggered a boom in publications of views on the Japanese psyche, and the word amae became well-known and influenced such academic fields as cultural anthropology, sociology and psychology.
A graduate of the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine who served there as a professor between 1971 and 1980, Doi published a variety of books featuring amae.
