SAPPORO (Kyodo) Sapporo joined the rest of Japan on Tuesday by finally mailing out applications for the government’s stimulus handouts, becoming the last municipality to distribute the forms to residents.
The Sapporo Municipal Government mailed application forms to 1.9 million residents in 950,000 households, so many that they filled 1,900 cardboard boxes on four trucks, officials said.
Sapporo City Hall has been barraged by residents who want the cash handed out quickly, the officials said.
“How long are you guys procrastinating? Tell me when I can get my cash,” one angry resident was quoted as saying over the phone.
Sapporo will start distributing the cash over the counter Wednesday and begin electronic remittances May 28, the officials said.
Under the cash program people are to get ¥12,000, except those 18 and younger and 65 or older, who are eligible for ¥20,000.
