A mayor on an Okinawa island has asked the government for permission to visit the disputed Senkaku islets, Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura said Wednesday.

Separately, Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Kazuo Kodama acknowledged reports stating that a letter received from Ishigaki Mayor Nagateru Ohama on April 3 expressed his intention to visit the uninhabited Japanese-held islets for property tax investigation purposes.
