NAGOYA (Kyodo) Toyota Motor Corp. claimed Friday its new Prius gasoline-electric hybrid car to be launched in mid-May has achieved the world's highest fuel efficiency, of 38 km per liter, an improvement of some 7 percent from the current model.

Toyota hopes to boost sales of the more fuel-efficient Prius on the back of tax incentives that started this month for environmentally friendly vehicles.

The incentives lower the vehicle tonnage tax by ¥150,000 to ¥200,000 for the current model. A specific tax cut for the new Prius has yet to be fixed.
