The House of Representatives adopted a resolution Tuesday in support of Tokyo's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The bid was endorsed with a majority vote by the Liberal Democratic Party-New Komeito ruling bloc along with the Democratic Party of Japan and Kokumin Shinto (People's New Party).

A similar resolution is expected at the House of Councilors on Wednesday.

The Lower House resolution describes Tokyo's hosting of the games as "extremely significant for international friendship and promotion of sports."

The chamber is prepared to back the organizing committee's bid to bring the games to Tokyo in 2016 and recognizes preparatory work for the proposed hosting as necessary, according to the resolution.

A parliamentary resolution is considered an important factor for the International Olympic Committee. The 2016 organizing committee, headed by Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara, is expected to intensify its bidding activity on the strength of the latest resolution.

The central government earlier pledged in writing to provide financial support to the Tokyo government if it incurs losses in its campaign.
