SHIZUOKA (Kyodo) A fire destroyed an Osaka-Tokyo night express bus early Monday in Makinohara, Shizuoka Prefecture, but the driver and 77 passengers got out unhurt, police said.

According to the police, the driver spotted smoke spewing from the rear of the double-decker bus at around 4:15 a.m. while traveling on the Tomei Expressway bound for Tokyo.

The bus stopped at a nearby service area and everyone evacuated without injury.

Police suspect the fire broke out in the engine compartment of the Seishun Mega-Dream Go bus.

It left Osaka Station at 10:40 p.m. Sunday and was supposed to arrive at Tokyo Station shortly after 8 a.m. Monday.
