YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) St. Marianna University School of Medicine has dismissed its president for misappropriating some ¥47 million in government subsidies, university officials said Tuesday.

Katsumi Yoshida was ousted from his post at the Kawasaki-based university on Feb. 25, they said, adding he did not spend the money on himself.

The money — subsidies to supplement research at the university from fiscal 2003 to 2007 — should have been spent within the fiscal year it was received and any left over should have been returned.

Yoshida diverted the money to buy supplies or for other purposes, they said.
