A former Oita education official convicted in a bribery scandal has given his retirement pay back to the prefecture, board officials said Saturday.

Masato Ninomiya, formerly the No. 2 secretariat official on the Oita prefectural board of education, is believed to have received more than ¥30 million upon retirement, but the board has not confirmed how much he received.

Ninomiya, 62, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for four years, by the Oita District Court in November for taking a bribe linked to a teaching examination in 2006.
