Asahi Glass Co. said Friday it will place some 3,400 employees at home and abroad on temporary leave due to falling demand for its products amid the deepening recession.

The total includes about 700 regular employees in Japan who will be given up to 19 days off in the period through March, the major flat-glass maker said.

The company did not disclose which plants will be affected by the temporary leave program.

In the face of the toughening business environment, all executive officers, including Chairman Masahiro Kadomatsu and President Kazuhiko Ishimura, will voluntarily return 10 percent of their monthly pay for the first six months of this year, the company said.
