The Tokyo District Court on Wednesday dismissed demands by two neighbors of cartoonist Kazuo Umezu to remove the red and white stripes from his Musashino home.

The house "attracts attention but cannot be said to destroy the scenery," presiding Judge Minoru Hatakeyama said.

Umezu, who showed up in court wearing a red-and-white striped tie, told reporters after the ruling, "I would like to live showing respect to others."

He often appears in public wearing his signature red-and-white striped shirts.

The house, completed last March, is decorated with horizontal red and white stripes about 50 cm wide.

A red tower with two round windows resembles Macchome-man, a popular character in one of Umezu's works.

The neighbors filed the lawsuit after the court turned down their request in 2007 for a provisional ruling to halt construction on the home.
