BANGKOK (Kyodo) Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva plans to visit Japan in early February to promote investment and tourism, a government official said Monday.

Panitan Wattanayakorn, a senior aide to Abhisit, said the visit Feb. 5 to 7 is aimed at restoring confidence in Thailand among Japanese investors and tourists.

Abhisit is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Taro Aso and business leaders during the trip.

The two governments are working on the agenda of the meeting and the details of the trip, diplomatic sources said.

Japan is Thailand's biggest investor.

Abhisit, leader of the Democrat Party, came to power on Dec. 15 following the collapse of the government of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat after months of political turmoil.

The unrest, which included the seizure of Bangkok's two key airports by antigovernment protesters, had a heavy impact on Thailand's economy.

This exacerbated the domestic effects of the global financial crisis.
