All Nippon Airways Co. said Friday it plans to promote Senior Executive Vice President Shinichiro Ito to president on April 1 to succeed Mineo Yamamoto.

Yamamoto, 63, has led Japan's second-largest airline for the past four years. He will become vice chairman and Chairman Yoji Ohashi will stay on in the same position.

Ito, 58, has held senior positions in both general administration and marketing.

"He takes the reins in turbulent times . . . by emphasizing ANA's frontline functions and working to bring fresh energy to the ANA ranks," the carrier said in a statement.
