The Justice Ministry will launch a study group this month on whether to extend or even abolish the statute of limitations for unsolved major crimes such as murders, ministry sources said Sunday.

They said sentiment is growing in the ministry that the emotional suffering of victims should be given more consideration, even though the limitations were extended in 2005. The National Association of Crime Victims and Surviving Families has been seeking abolition of the statute of limitations, arguing, "The pain of crime victims and survivors are for life. It's unfair that the offender gets a limitation."
