Japan Airlines Corp. has filed with the transport ministry to hike fares on key international routes from April 1, including a 13 percent increase for flights to North America.

The application follows the International Air Transport Association's decision to raise fares to help member airlines cover higher aircraft and other costs, JAL said.

Proposed fares also include a 13 percent rise for weekday flights to destinations in Latin America and Hawaii, and a 10 percent hike for those to South Korea and India.

If approved by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, the weekday business-class round-trip fare between Tokyo and New York, for example, will rise to ¥1,042,400 from the current ¥922,400.

JAL will seek approval for the new Japan-Europe fares in early February.

Rival All Nippon Airways Co. also plans to apply for fare hikes next month.
