Dewi Sukarno, the widow of former Indonesian President Sukarno and now a TV celebrity in Japan, played the role of mediator in the 1960s between Sukarno and Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda.

Declassified Japanese diplomatic documents show that in a confidential official telegram dated Jan. 5, 1964, Ambassador to Indonesia Hiroo Furuuchi told Sukarno that Ikeda was hoping to hold talks with him "as conveyed in a message delivered by Miss Dewi."

Dewi Sukarno said she had been in contact with Ikeda and his family.

"The Japanese ambassador frequently contacted me, saying things like 'I want to see the president' or 'how does his schedule look,' " she said. "I was pushed around by the Japanese Foreign Ministry," she added.

She also said she delivered a personal letter from Sukarno to Prime Minister Eisaku Sato, Ikeda's successor.
