Japan Tobacco Inc. plans to close five overseas factories next year to consolidate its production system and increase efficiency, company sources said Tuesday.

The move to close factories comes as JT’s production in some countries has overlapped operations of British tobacco maker Gallaher Group PLC, which JT acquired in 2007.
