Around ¥69 million disappeared from a locked cash van Saturday in Tokyo while it was left unattended by two security guards, police said.

The guards, aged 51 and 52, parked the van in a lot near JR Asagaya Station at 10:08 a.m. to collect cash from a nearby automated teller machine and returned at 10:54 a.m. to find the cash in four bags missing, according to investigators.

The guards claimed they locked the van before leaving and it was still locked when they returned, police said, adding there were no signs the locks had been broken.

Although the van does not follow a fixed route when collecting cash from and refilling ATMs, it was frequently seen in the area near the crime scene on Saturdays.
