OSAKA (Kyodo) Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. has issued a recall of three countertop dishwashers after the company received four reports of the machines catching fire.

The recall involves 158,000 units.

The company said Tuesday it is recalling about 157,200 units of the NP-40SX1 and NP-40SX2, both manufactured between May 2001 and May 2002, and about 800 units manufactured under Tokyo Gas Co. and Osaka Gas Co. brands.

Matsushita said the fires started around the fan motor and is replacing the defective parts free of charge. It said detergent that seeped into the inside of the machines may have led to an electrical fault there.

The fires occurred between October 2005 and last March in Tokyo and three other prefectures. No injuries were reported.
