A teenager and a man died after they and another teen were swept away in the Tama River on Saturday morning, police said.

Satoshi Kosaka, 19, and Katsuhiko Nomura, 28, died at a hospital following the incident, while the third male, who is 18, suffered no serious injuries, the police said.

They were among a dozen friends who had gone to the river at around 8 a.m. for a barbecue about 500 meters from Tamagawa Station in Ota Ward on the Tokyu Toyoko Line.

Kosaka and a few others were playing in shallow water about 30 meters from the bank when Kosaka was suddenly swept off his feet. Nomura and the third man tried to rescue him but were also swept away.

The water in the shallow area was only about 50 cm deep, but the area where they were found was about 3 meters deep.
