Foreign tourists climbing Mount Fuji are returning home with a souvenir certificate that Yamanashi Prefecture began offering this summer.

The prefecture is expected to issue some 400 inaugural certificates to foreign climbers during the July 1-Aug. 30 climbing season.

Foreign climbers can receive the certificate if foreign travel companies organizing Mount Fuji expeditions apply in advance. Japanese are not eligible.

The certificate measures 18 cm by 13 cm and is emblazoned with a photo of Japan's tallest mountain. It is available in Korean, Chinese, English and Japanese. More than 80 percent of foreign climbers favor the Japanese-language version, according to Yamanashi prefectural officials.
