A man driving while intoxicated and trying to elude police collided with another vehicle in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, early Sunday, killing a woman and seriously injuring her husband and another man, police said.
The police identified the woman as Asami Koshikawa, 25, and her husband as Masaru, 32. The second man in the car is a coworker of the husband.
Masatoshi Shimizu, a 35-year-old convenience store employee, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drunk driving in connection with the 2:05 a.m. accident, the police said. He suffered minor injuries.
According to police, Shimizu did not stop at a police checkpoint, prompting the pursuit.
