Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, visiting Europe to mark the 10th anniversary of a historic ruling by the International Court of Justice to promote nuclear disarmament, called Friday for an immediate worldwide stop of the production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons.

"I would ask you what would happen if your city was hit by an A-bomb," Akiba poignantly asked in an address to the European Parliament.

Earlier in the week, he visited London and The Hague.

The International Court of Justice 10 years ago advised that all nations are under an obligation to pursue negotiations in good faith and conclude measures leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects.
