Police have arrested a couple in Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture, on suspicion of fatally abusing their 9-month-old girl.
Shintaro Shigematsu, 23, and his wife, Sachiko, 24, are suspected of immersing the baby, Karen, in a bath Sunday evening. The girl was taken to a hospital by ambulance and died Monday, apparently from drowning.
The couple have admitted abusing the child, saying she kept them from sleeping, according to police.
They suspect the couple put the baby, their second daughter, in the bath at 7 p.m. Sunday. She was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m. Monday.
The hospital alerted police Monday morning about suspected abuse after staff found bruises on the baby's body.
