A Japanese man was stabbed to death early Tuesday while walking home in the Makati district in the Philippine capital, police said.

Koichi Sugiyama, in his late 40s, sustained three stab wounds, police said. He died later at a nearby hospital.

Police said the incident probably took place shortly before 3:30 a.m. in a back street of Makati, the country's financial district.

Bystanders who found Sugiyama bleeding in the street took him to the hospital.

Police are looking at robbery as a possible cause of the attack, adding Sugiyama's mobile phone was missing. Mobile phone snatching is rampant in Manila.

Initial investigations showed Sugiyama is a co-owner of Bluehorn Club with a Filipino business partner.

Sugiyama's Filipino girlfriend said he was coming from a birthday party.
