A knife-wielding man broke into a mountain lodge in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, around midnight Saturday, robbing a couple of about 10,000 yen before tying up the husband and abducting his wife, police said Sunday.
The woman was later found safe when she sought help at a house in a nearby town, police said, without giving details on how she got away from the assailant.
Motoaki Kashiwazaki, 58, and his wife, Chiyoko, 56, from Chiba Prefecture, were the only people staying in the cottage on Mount Yokone. The assailant is believed to have fled with the woman in the couple's car, the police said.
The suspect, described as 40 years old and about 170 cm tall, threatened the couple with a knife before robbing them.
The couple's car was missing from a parking area on the road leading to the cottage, police said.
