NAGASAKI (Kyodo) A U.S. Navy destroyer forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, entered Nagasaki port Friday morning despite opposition from some locals stemming from a Yokosuka robbery-murder involving a U.S. sailor in January.

The 8,315-ton Stethem is visiting Nagasaki to promote friendship, according to the U.S. Navy. It will stay there until Monday.

Both Nagasaki Prefecture and the city of Nagasaki called for cancellation of the port call.

About 80 people demonstrated near the port as the ship arrived.

A 21-year-old crew member of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk has been arrested earlier on suspicion of killing a Japanese woman and stealing money from her Jan. 3.
