SYDNEY (Kyodo) A minivan accident killed a Japanese tourist and injured three others Wednesday on Tasmania, local police said Thursday.

The 59-year-old woman who died was with three other Japanese tourists, apparently her husband and another couple, whose rented minivan veered off the road and crashed into a tree in the eastern part of the island at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

The vehicle's 62-year-old male driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries, while a 63-year-old man traveling in the front passenger seat and a 61-year-old woman in the rear were airlifted in critical condition to Royal Hobart Hospital in the Tasmanian capital.

A hospital spokeswoman said Thursday morning the woman was in serious condition. The man was listed as stable.

The names of the accident victims have not been released.
