The Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy discussed a proposal Tuesday for cutting the number of central government employees by at least 5 percent on a net basis over the next five years, participants said.
Four private-sector members of the key government panel also called for making a large cut in public-sector personnel costs based on the setting of a specific target, such as halving the cost of central government employees within 10 years in terms of its ratio to nominal gross domestic product.
The council is slated to compile a basic guideline on ways to cut the public payroll in November.
