Construction workers unearthed 25 million yen in cash Thursday at a condominium construction site in Kawasaki, police said.

The money -- about 2,500 old 10,000 yen bills wrapped in a vinyl bag -- was found at about 8:30 a.m., police said. The cash was separated into 25 bundles.

The construction site is in a residential district about 500 meters south of Musashi-Shinjo Station on the JR Nanbu Line.

The workers found the cash 50 cm down, police said.

Police will hold the cash as lost property and question the owner of the land for clues as to who might have buried it.

According to neighbors, the private house and yard of an elderly couple sat on the site until several years ago. The site was later turned into a parking lot, and ownership reportedly shifted sometime around 2003.

The 25 million yen will be split between the workers and the current owner of the land if nobody claims the cash within half a year.

Construction work at the site began April 1, but the workers didn't begin digging up the ground until Thursday, according to police.
