Nepalese wildlife officials say they are keeping tabs on Japanese tourists to the Himalayan kingdom.

While the majority of visitors are happy just to take in Nepal's mountains, temples, and lush green countryside, some are scouring the forests in search of wild stag beetles that they then try to smuggle back to Japan.

Collecting wild insects -- including stag beetles -- without a permit in Nepal carries a fine of $120, two years' imprisonment, or both.

Seven Japanese visitors have faced trial and been penalized by Nepalese courts for collecting stag beetles without permission.
