Acclaimed movie camera engineer Takuo Miyagishima will be awarded an honorary Oscar, the Gordon E. Sawyer Award, for his technical contributions to cinema, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday.

Miyagishima, one of the movie industry's leading design engineers, will receive the award at the academy's Scientific and Technical Awards Dinner on Feb. 12 in Beverly Hills. Miyagishima is the 18th recipient of the Sawyer award.

Since beginning his career at movie camera specialist Panavision in 1955, Miyagishima has developed and designed technologies that helped expand the field of cinematography.

He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 1991 Fuji Gold Medal.
