A Japanese has contracted dengue fever in Nepal, marking the country's first confirmed case of the disease, a local newspaper reported Monday.
The Himalayan Times quoted a doctor at a clinic in Katmandu as saying the Japanese, who has stayed in Nepal for the past several months, has tested positive for the disease.
"Based on clinical symptoms, we had conducted a blood test through the serological method on two Japanese patients and one of them has tested positive for dengue fever," Basudev Pandey of the Everest International Clinic and Research Center was quoted as saying. Pandey declined to disclose the name or gender of the patient.
Pandey said the Japanese visited Chitwan in central Nepal for volunteer work, but has not traveled across the border to India where the fever has been frequently reported, according to the newspaper.
