The Sendai District Court sentenced a gangster to death Thursday and four other people to life imprisonment for robbery-murder and other charges.

According to the court, 40-year-old Shu Takahashi, a member of Yamaguchi-gumi, Japan’s largest crime syndicate, and the four others strangled 36-year-old Sendai moneylender Eiichi Kyo and robbed him of about 300,000 yen in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture, on Feb. 3, 2001.

They then dumped his body in the sea.

They wanted to keep 2 million yen they had borrowed from Kyo, the court said.
