OSAKA – A 23-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of beating and seriously injuring his 6-month-old son at their home in Moriguchi, Osaka Prefecture, in September 2002.
Prosecutors said they finally decided to arrest Motomu Ukisu, a part-time worker at a pachinko parlor, due to differences between his statements and a doctor’s diagnosis of the boy’s injuries. They also searched his home and several other places in connection with the case.
Medical staff alerted police in September 2002 that the boy may have been abused. But the police did not file charges against Ukisu until last July.
The police said they could not say why it took so long for charges to be filed, or for the prosecutors to make an arrest.
Ukisu has denied the allegation. He told the prosecutors his son “fell from his bed.”
