Diplomatic sources at the United Nations said Tuesday that U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan will meet Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi in Japan around Feb. 20.

It will be Annan's first visit to Japan since January 2002, when he attended an international donor conference on Afghanistan's reconstruction in Tokyo.

Japan plans to advocate the need to strengthen U.N. functions, such as reforming the Security Council, and urge the U.N. to take a more active role in supporting the rehabilitation of Iraq, the sources said.
