A completely preserved adult mammoth frozen in the Siberian permafrost will probably be put on display at the 2005 Aichi World Exposition in an unprecedented exhibit, organizers said Wednesday.

The Japan Association for the 2005 World Exposition said it has found the head of a mammoth in the Russian Republic of Sakha and has informally agreed with its government to remove the beast.

The two sides plan to sign an accord Friday in Tokyo.

Last summer, the association dispatched a mission to Russia in search of mammoth specimens. They found the head within the Arctic Circle.

Mammoths became extinct about 10,000 years ago,

The head has already been unearthed and refrigerated at a laboratory in Sakha, the largest republic of the Russian Federation, covering about 20 percent of its area.

The association believes the rest of the body is intact and hopes to start digging in the spring.
