An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.2 jolted a wide area from central to western Japan at around 2:50 p.m. Tuesday.

The quake logged a reading of 4 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale in Mie and Nara prefectures, the Meteorological Agency said.

The focus of the quake was under the seabed off Mie Prefecture.

An intensity of 3 on the Japanese scale was recorded in Gifu, Aichi, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka and Wakayama prefectures, officials said.

An intensity of 3 on the Japanese scale can be felt by most people in a building, while 4 is strong enough to topple unstable objects and awaken sleeping people.

The quake broke some windows in the town hall of Omiya, Mie Prefecture, according to the prefectural government, while services between Misedani and Owase stations on the JR Kisei Line in the same prefecture were suspended for around two hours.
