Miyazaki Prefectural Police said Wednesday they will turn over to prosecutors their case against an officer who allegedly failed to act on reports of crimes and other matters over a two-year period up to November 2001.

The 26-year-old chief patrolman failed to deal with 38 reports on lost and found items, thefts and other cases, and kept the related documents at his home, police said.

The officer was stationed at Miyakonojo Police Station between January 1997 and March 2002, after which he was transferred to Miyazaki Kita Police Station.

In August, he was asked by his immediate superior about a delay in his submission of documents he was in charge of while assigned to a police box. He then revealed to the superior what he had done during his years at Miyakonojo Police Station, police said.
